Occupation | Alexander Keir Longair Scientist - New PQST: This was taken from a clipping, possibly from the Dundee Courier sometime in 1952. Mr Alexander Keir Longair, Dundee born scientist, who was one of Britain's atomic research team during the war, has received a new appointment in Canada. For five years he has been assistant scientific attache at the British Embassy in Washington. He is currently spending a motoring holiday in Scotland with his Canadian born wife Jean and their 2 year old son John. Next month he sails for New York on his way to Ottawa to a post in the Department of National Defence. Youngest son of the late Mr William (Plum) Longair, former Dundee FC player and trainer, and the late Mrs Janet Longair. He was educated at Morgan Academy, and graduated M.A. B.Sc with first-class honours in natural philosophy at St Andrews University. He remained at St Andrews on research work from 1933 until 1936 when he was appointed a junior scientific officer at the National Physical Laboratory at Teddington, Middlesex. Four years later he joined the staff of the Department of Scientific & Research, London. When the department took over atomic research work in 1941 he was assigned to this branch in an administrative capacity under Sir Edward Appleton, now principal of Edinburgh University. His colleagues on the technical side included Dr W.G. Peaney who directed the Monte Bello Exploration. Mr Longair visited Washington and Canada in 1944 in connection with the transfer of atomic experiments to USA. Shortly before his appointment to Washington in 1947 he visited Dundee for the British Association and spoke at Perth and Blairgowrie on atomic energy. Mr Longair's twin elder brothers, James and William Longair reside at 7 Auchrannie Terr and 4 Kennelworth Ave, Dundee, respectively. There is also a reference to Alexander Longair in a book called 'Spying without Spies'. | |
